About the Senior Seminar Capstone Course

The Rowland Unified School District Certification Program provides students with an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge, useful skills, and experience in the business community by providing. Students must demonstrate a high level of performance by meeting standards established by the Rowland Unified School District and validated by institutions of higher learning and the business/industry community.

 

The Senior Seminar Capstone Course brings together the knowledge and skills students have learned throughout the Career Certification Program.  Students successfully completing the program requirements at the expected standard receive a special certificate at graduation in addition to their diploma.

 

The certificate assures employers, trade schools, community colleges and universities of the high level of skills, knowledge and personal development attained by certified students as they seek employment, further training and higher levels of education. 

 

The Senior Seminar course is approved for A-G UC/CSU course credit.

 

While in Senior Seminar, Students focus on the following areas: 
 
Research
  • Research Project: Students design and complete a project that demonstrates advanced knowledge related to their area of specialization. (Starting in September)
Connections
  • Connections to the Future Event:  students practice their professional networking and employment skills as they interact with business and community leaders.  (November)

  • Presentations: Students prepare and present an oral presentation of their project to a panel of judges. (March)
Internship
  • Internship: Students are placed at a local business where they work after school in a non-paid position for 36 hours over a 7-week period to gain practical experience in their career interest area. Using a rubric, employers evaluate student work. (September to March)
portfolio
  • Electronic Portfolio: Students assemble a portfolio containing a collection of work representing their four years of study. (Starting in September)
interview
  • Exit Interview: student individually present to a panel of professionals for evaluation.These outside evaluations are an important addition to teacher assessments of proficiency. Out of the six overall areas in which students are rated, five must be at the proficient level or above. (May)
