For students and parents of students attending the 2023 Skills USA National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA.

we have the southern PowerPoint so this is a national leadership conference and we're going to leave on Monday June 19th and return on the 24th and we're going to be flying to all right so all the arrangements have been made all of the plane reservations have been made the hotel everything done okay you're registered for the conference everything's done so here's what's going to happen on Monday you're going to travel to Atlanta and then in the evening you're going to have the skills us California skillsusa dinner at the hotel Tuesday we have some free time oh that's going to be good and then the opening ceremonies are seven now why did we go to a day earlier because we're going to need to rest up trust me the weather in Atlanta is muggy what is hot that we're going to be walking from the hotel which is about four or five blocks to Convention Center so you need comfortable shoes okay don't bring shoes that are tight that you can't walk in get some comfortable shoes there right after tennis shoes okay but we do have dress coats so we'll talk about that Wednesday and Thursday that's what we intend to come from the conference and we'll talk about that individually cuz everybody's going to have a different role at the conference the Champions Festival that's a night where they have food trucks is kind of a celebration they always do stuff like that on the Thursday night so that's from 6 to 9:30 and then Friday during Friday we have some free time so we'll talk about that in the ward ceremony is 5 and it's at the arena I believe although we're not competing we still want to go there and we still want to what's happening this is remember a learning experience and why you're going is so you can bring back things for other students and we can build our our program okay so that's why you have been chosen to go Saturday we're going to return to Ontario so we're going to get back on the plane and we'll be back by what did I say have the times OK Google play what is the national leadership conference I'll give all of you the link to the skillsusa National leadership conference website so you can see for yourself you're going to be amongst thousands of other students business partners Educators and we're all going to come together and watch everybody have a good time to talk about trade learn technical skills is going to be huge so you're going to be representing Rowland High School or no most high school for boys on Unified School District in California so remember that you'll have the opportunity to meet other members of skillsusa you're going to get some valuable information they're going to have a gender room where the vendors come and show you all the latest Technologies going to be fabulous okay so here are the events that you're going to attend the kickoff is the opening General Session that we're going to go on Tuesday night on there's also check Espio isn't for you to engage with industry before I told you since there's going to be what's the Benders so you're going to talk to people in Industry you know they're looking for people or jobs so when you graduate you might want to go there and talk to them there's championships now this is where we don't actually have people or students competing this year we didn't quite make it but you can to watch the other students compete so not here when your computer know what to look for this is really good to help you Michael and mr. Davis you can jump in anytime okay if you want to say so so I do a couple things that I try to have students if we did this at the at the stake conference we had exit survey and I asked the students some basic questions what we did we could do better what do you see other schools doing great what can we incorporate that those schools are doing some of it and be logistics for example one thing that we learned from previous years having a Dragon transport different things so the series schools that knew that we're going to be traveling lot they had certain gear certain Hardware that are not specific to a competition but just so they can go from the hotel to the those things are important in for your individual competitions I always tell students to look out if there's a shirt in item or or or a brand and they're using that weaken in future instant purchase Incorporated so we have an easier go about it the next time I have them look at Hardware specifically I'm using robotics here but if you're looking extra to robotics components are they using some sort of storage system travel system take tons of pictures of what they're doing if you're allowed to take pictures and it is in essence Constance to get to National and you'll see a trend of schools that have gone there consistently all tend to have similar items so even though we're not kidding I always have to do is look at your neighbors see what they're doing so we can incorporate it so we can be successful yeah that's good we're going there to see what everybody else is doing and its status so valuable okay when you're going to be speeding next year Mr Davis is there anything you'd like to say yeah I know that I think Mister Frost or said it all and he said it well you know it's a she ignition and it's it's a time that they can look to the other students as Romans. know whose good they have a Keen Eye for quality and and so I challenge the students to look around be aware the students that are are bringing their A-game and then that's the idea is for us to take our a game next year exactly now the good thing is and you guys should be really proud of yourselves you guys were chosen to go you know we didn't have any people any students that one of our place in the sky competition that could go but we chose you to go because we're confident in you that you're going to be bringing back the so and sharing them with other soon you're in a leadership role here now and you're going to bring back everything that you learned to get other students in their competition so we can do great competitions next year okay and you got to remember all this to is that are here at the national competition competing have won gold silver and bronze medals so these are the winners these are the top dogs from all over the country these are not the people that didn't win medals these are the students that won medals so you're learning from the best other component of it is you're not there just observe your there to to participate and I'm talking specifically to my chapter of your there also to serve a purpose you're there to help in the voting of process or skills it's similar to to Our House of Representatives we have a boys to get to bow down things on National National things theme song elements are going to be implemented next year so it's not just observing growth people participating is this specifically if you're going to be a delicate or if you're serving as an alternative of elegant so it's not just watching seeds also going to be part 2 the painting in the Democratic process or skillsusa and every year out of this national competition it intends to filter through all the states Chapters at what the theme is or what the competition's how they will change and it's also a great way to build your leadership skills you might be in committees and subcommittees and you might have to develop some sort of deliverable you have your breakout sessions so it's not just sitting and watching listening you also get a beeper to painting and I don't want to give it all away the skills leadership has their own agenda but I just want to prepare the students that's an element as well and hopefully when we return you can incorporate those elements in those leadership skills into your pathway into your order so you can be successful you know this year we were fortunate enough for our chapter Rita engineering pathway of we earned bronze recognition through some great leadership that we had and on top of burning the disc status of getting bronze you also bring money back to your chapter that you can use in your chapter as as issue as responsible as you can so this year we earned bronze I got the $2,000 stipend I want to call Grandpa and fun step go back to your charger so something to think about as you return to your chapter / pathway oh I know who Jordy are my students but if we have other students for other different Pathways just keep that in mind you can definitely learn things bring it back or breathe it and keep building your chapter all right the other thing that we have on here for the events these are the championship Festival like I said there's going to be food truck there's a live DJ and don't have a stage there's dancing all kinds of fun stuff so you might want to bring a little extra spending money for this because that would be probably your dinner will eat or we go there so you're not so hungry but if you want to buy other snacks you have to buy it there okay window up one note about the dance and this is something we picked up from the state I'm just saying we have a lot of smart kids that are very talented and have a lot of great hand-eye coordination YouTube videos about line dancing there was a lot of line dancing at this year's date chapter it looks really fun I don't know how to line dance but if I did I would have participated so just for those who competed in in state that one fun night I hope that you participate more so and get a kick out of it I think you guys going to be to all charged up for this it's a lot of fun so okay what you're bringing back can we talked about this you're going to develop skills you're going to build confidence let me tell you before you go in are you thinking what am I doing here and by the time you get back when you guys get on that plane you're going to be so worn out its own energized and so excited you're not going to know what to do with yourself so trust me this is opportunity of your lifetime before you get into your career to go do something like this cuz not everybody gets to do but you'll get to explore other career pathway is there's going to be opportunities for you to sign up and get scholarship work opportunities because there's going to be lots of different people from industry there this is the biggest thing when I was in Chicago with the students from Rowland High School last year we sat down in the hotel and I told him I said look around you okay they're students everywhere I said if you don't go out and network with your other with the other students and find out what they're doing I said you're going to miss out on a great opportunity now the way we're going to do this is I got extra pins and if you went to the stake conference Utah well I've got a lot of California state pins each of you will get it probably it doesn't it when you exchange those pins with students you start talking to them about where they're from what they're doing all kinds of ideas is a wonderful experience so I expect you to do that you're going to feel a sense of accomplishment and belonging is going to be really good 1414 Wendover from two different schools this is going to be teamwork and some of you will get to practice some Hands-On skills so this is like I said just a great opportunity okay now what you need to remember okay and we're going to repeat this your representatives of rolling Unified School District No galus or Rowland High School and your it is from California to add all times you are to be your best in representing us okay you have to remember that because you're going to see a lot of students out there who are not remembering this and I'll tell you this you never get a second chance to make a first impression and keep that in your hat because you're going to see students doing some and you're thinking I'm grown up and I don't want to do that and I don't want people to get that out of my school because when I see that I think she'll students are not in manage appropriately we were in a hotel in Nashville for 5 years ago and there was a bunch of junior high school students playing on the elevator will what did they do when the elevator was going up or down I don't know how they did it they were jump it up and the elevator got stuck they were stuck in that elevator for 4 hours am I thought was worth you know at that school really that they got kicked out of the hotel okay and I just leave the bad Mark for everybody so they don't do anything but we'll talk about that okay so expenses what's covered like I say everything's covered we had your travel I have seats on the airplane how do you were going to be sitting on the window seats okay there's going to be at least two of you together in a row if you guys went exchange it that's fine seats are expensive because not only do you pay for the flight you have to pay for this certain seat that you have so whatever you guys want to do with that that's fine all meals we're going to provide you scream breakfast lunch and some snacks okay I'm glad when we get there I'll get some snacks I'll get chips whatever so you guys have something to eat for you're not spending your money on snacks and things like that what's not going to be covered is it extra snacks or meals if we go to some of the attractions you're going to need money for that okay and I'll explain that and then purchase of souvenirs or other person so how much money you want to bring I don't know if it's up to you what you want to bring okay but like I said boosters snacks we're going to provide you with we're going to eat is going to be the Pancake House if you go online you'll see it's it's a southern thing but it's really cool but you'll be able to eat a lot of food so anyway so that was provided okay so the first thing we need to talk about as a travel to Atlanta okay parents we need you to bring your stuff get to the airport by 5:30 on Monday June 19th okay you need to come in with your student and check in with me don't leave without checking with me because I need to make sure that you're still has everything they need to get on the plane please please remember your school picture ID if you don't have that you can't get on the plane. Not a picture got anything on your phone you need to have that bad with you because when you go into the security area I have your ticket and I got your name off of your badge and it has to match if it doesn't match were in trouble okay so remember that if you don't have your school ID go get one okay cuz you're going to need it what is checking all the big luggage okay I'd rather you not carry-on luggage because it's a pain in the neck when were trying to get on it play the all I needed should be checked in all right that we're paying for that so don't worry about the cost going out there I have purchase which one of you is skillsusa polo shirt and I'm going to have your names embroidered on them I want you to learn how to climb into his school ID is the app called manga so what so what the schools have done at least are schools that has done has transitioned from physical ideas to digital IDs but I believe I can work with Miss Phillips and and maybe we can get those printed out for you if not or our site will cover that Adam so I'll talk to Miss Phillips tomorrow and see if we can get those printed out as soon as possible before we leave went to school here yeah we need that you cannot do it off the phone and I'll make sure that each student has served as gliding okay so I need a dating site mr. Davis what about your ID so you probably have the same thing maybe he's got off okay I'll talk to them about that we ain't so we are still going with the copy of an ID perfect okay so the skill shirt that I'm buying you you're going to get a t-shirt when you get to Atlanta to give you a t-shirt but I'm buying you one of the real nice polo shirts and I'm going to have your name embroidered on it I'm going to try to do that okay so Dad is what you were going to wear when we go to Atlanta and you need to have black khaki pants and it's a red t-shirt I mean a red Polo shirt okay and that way I can keep track of you until I get to know you Kate Beckett we have another comments of you can confirm this so as soon as I ask and can they bring a small carry-on just to carry necessary items you can I just don't want suitcases okay because some people take their suitcases on and they have to find a room in the overhead bins and then it fogs up everything so since we're paying for everything I prefer you don't have to but I prefer everybody putting their luggage checking it in Joker versus backpacks that's fine but Victory Tuesday in Tucson the plane to things but you know some of you haven't worn before believe me it's kind of a hassle so the less you take you something take your backpack put a change of clothes in there in case she don't have anything else but because you never know where the baggage is going to go but our flights direct so it's not going to go anywhere okay know when we get to Atlanta Atlanta have a transit system from the airport to directly to the hotel we're going to take the train okay perfectly safe is very nice you can see the city is about a fifteen-minute ride okay and then we'll come up the escalator and walk to the hotel which is Dubai blocks away from the transit system all right so this is a real Adventure all right okay again bring your picture ID be at the airport at 5:30 a.m. okay our plane leaves at 7:10 but you know we all have to meet we all have to check in they probably won't let us until about 6 but that's okay be there at 5:30 now the return flight is going to be bad 235 okay so parents pick your students up then all right I want to make sure everybody has somebody to pick them up one time I waited two hours for family come pick her up so we need to make sure that happens the Hotel this is our hotel this picture this is our hotel at be sure before it's going to blow your mind this is the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Peachtree Center. So I will give you all this information or email everything to you so you have it the room assignments inside the room assignments everybody has their own bed our policy at the district is some schools make you share a king size bed in a room do not do that okay you either have two beds in the room or 11 key so Adam is Adam here yeah Adam the one that's going to be in a room all by himself with a king bed hopefully they'll put us all in the same floor okay hopefully so we'll see what happens with that okay climbing and Jackie take the time to think thoroughly about what you need and then pack accordingly and I wish to tell you some of the things that you're going to need cuz that's the first question mr. Foster will mr. what should I bring what we'll tell you your family itinerary tag your luggage inside and out all right they do have tags at the airport if you don't have one make are you bringing your cell phone and the charger don't leave your charger at home okay they're very expensive do you have buy one and then the national leadership conference app will do that save my cell phone number on your phone when you get it make sure you bring your medical insurance card and we will get you all the appropriate paperwork and everything your I will get that to you and get everything signed again bring comfortable shoes We're going to be walking and it's going to be hot and muggy trust me I've been there in July and it's really something I'm your prescription medicines for you to play with you in this General Sessions when we walk over to the convention center they don't want any backpacks in the convention center why I don't know but I think it's cuz people much you're there might be stuffed and things like that so they don't want you to bring those in there okay here is your conference attire okay I just try to put this together because I thought you would want to know what you're going to wear so Monday all that you're going to wear your skillsusa Rowland shirt that I provide because we're going to fly out there with it and then in the east at 7 we have a dinner with the California delegation so all California is staying in this one hotel all of California okay Tuesday during the days casual I will show you what casual mean okay casual is just generally what you were to school and then the opening session Tuesday evening is your skillsusa a tire so you're good I need to bring your jackets and your shirts and your pants and your shoes that you wear during skillsusa competition but whatever you work for that you wear to the openings. all right Wednesday daytime business casual, show you what that is in the evening is going to be casual we're not going to be doing anything that night so it's going to be casual will go out to dinner you don't see what else we can do and see I don't know if you realize this were this is there's a CNA Center and that's worthy do the c n n news and there's also inside the CNN Center there's a food Park and then across from what is the Olympic Park where they had the Olympics where the guy Sean outside explosives I can't remember what year that was but it's it's very famous so that park is there too so you're going to see all of that right on Thursday again the daytime conference business casual and then the championship Festival you going to be outside so that's going to be casual Friday during the day is going to be casual and then the awards session if you're you were competing you would wear your skillsusa attire you can wear your skills at entire if you business casual is appropriate and then Saturday we're on our way home you can wear whatever you want change that make sense all right so this is your skills USA why are you familiar with that okay business casual attire dress slacks khaki or dress jeans not jeans with holes in it okay to breast right guys if you're going to wear the jeans to wear a belt with it and dress it up dress shoes dress boots or presentable shoes but not sneakers sandals or flip-flops or work boots okay so you're some examples of what business casual is okay one shows a little bit of a t-shirt but their dress pants can wear a jacket guys you don't need to wear a tie if you have a polo shirt or a nice dress shirt you can wear that it is going to be steamy hot I'll say that again right so if I wear short sleeve shirts don't wear anything long sleeves don't do it you're going to be miserable think about the first two weeks of school in August but it's muggy to it it might rain so this is the sound if you ever been there you know it rain sideways okay so I think everybody's pretty much got this the casual dress all right no flip watch or inappropriate or dangerous books where you can work casual shoes the reason why I don't want you wearing flip-flops as you're going to be walking and walking around and I don't want you to get hurt okay so no flip-flops you can wear sandals but no flip-flops clothing with inappropriate messages you know everything as alcohol and cigarettes you can just undergarments without appropriate outer clothing probably not a good idea to wear a tank top unless it's you know if it's kind of a full tank top okay guys you're not allowed to wear tank tops okay only the girls there's no swimming attire and closing which does not come your back shoulders or midriff and or attention diverted attire some of this do this again that I've seen I can't believe their parents will let them out of the house let alone advisor if I see you're wearing something inappropriate I want to tell you to go back and change okay and part of it for your safety you know Northside Atlanta is a bad City but it's a city just like any other city and you don't need to be walking down the street and you know just something might happen don't bring attention to yourself okay and we'll talk more about that when we get to Atlanta they're going to give us a briefing safety and all that when we get there send message to everybody Chase we have two days or free time okay we have Tuesday Monday but Monday we're going to be exhausted Tuesday we have free time and Friday we have free time so there's a couple things we can do now remember if we're going to do something we only have one advisor we probably won't go anywhere unless everybody goes okay maybe I have to see what the temperature is like there a couple times some of the students went to like the World of Coca-Cola by themselves what kind of have to kind of see but the Georgia Aquarium is a great place to go you know it's it's a lot of fun but we can do that but you have to purchase the ticket can you have to let me know because we need to purchase it before we leave like we need to purchase the next couple weeks so they don't sell Out World of Coca-Cola at that rate to where you get the cheese you would how many flavors are on Coca-Cola you never knew that that's fun I'm the College Football Hall of Fame if you're interested in that the SkyView Atlanta what is the ferris wheel and the national Center for human rights and civil rights has $14 as well so we can talk about this can I see a show of hands how many might be interested in going to the aquarium I don't see how Michael DC have nobody wants a ruby okay Ruby IV are interested okay all right so we'll see what happens okay Adam is it out of his interested good okay alright let's move on so we can we'll figure that out later to expectations Learning Experience all that surround you events and workshops be proactive okay don't go there and sit down in the lobby expect them to come to you you need to go out and figure it out that's why you're here because your leader that's what we expect of you all students are required to participate in the workshop I don't care about two per day because I don't know how many there's going to be right now okay networking with colleagues and students from other schools please do that and I want to remind you when we get there I want you to network I want you to to talk to people learn to talk to people that's how you're going to get good jobs is by networking learn about yourself be open to challenges and Adventures so figure out what do I need to learn here okay what do I need to experience that I don't experience and one of the things that probably you haven't experienced is an experience like this where there's thousands of students United States and I think there's some other countries that are coming too so anyway no here's the hard part the rules okay these are the rules of conduct from skillsusa okay you're going to be respectful in public and private property including the hotel motel with your house. There is no running in the hallways you are a high-school students and you're almost grown up I expect you to act grown up okay and I'm going to treat you like an adult because you're almost there okay you're going to spend the night in the room but you recite you're going to bide by the curfew and we'll set the curfew when I get there okay you'll not enter any hotel room other than the one with your assigned okay you might be working with others okay and that's fine but be careful you're not going to leave the hotel without my permission . do not go anywhere without my permission if you do you're going to be in serious trouble we had somebody do that we had three students right Michael Ed at Riverside I mean at Ontario who did that do not leave you're not going anywhere without me I'm responsible for you to something happens to you who's going to get in trouble be for not going to do that leave your alcoholic beverages and your drugs that I wish you do that shame on you I hope you're not but Firearms dangerous weapons please don't bring a pocket knife on the plane please don't take it away and throw it out so no explosive compounds or anything like that and you will respect still do a say a tire you're not going to be smoking cigarettes including e-cigarettes of 84 while wearing the clothing you're not going to do that at all wood were there okay there's no smoking so get used to it before we go okay bowling is not allowed you're not engaged any behavior that might be deemed sexual harassment here again you'll keep me informed of any of your where about you must wear your identification badge at all times when we go to eat dinner when we go to you know some of the places around you where you buy all right the dress code and my contact Shelby as well marry at all times all right here's my rules okay buddy system at all times if you are leaving and you get permission from me to go somewhere you must take a buddy do not go anywhere alone. All right just everybody got that buddy sister Metal X and you're to tell me where you're at at all times I need to know where you're at what you're doing no alcohol drugs or cigarettes no girls or boys in each other's room the curfew that's fine room checks will be here every night and follow directions don't abused our trust and the trust in your parents now there's one other thing in there that I didn't include and not waking up in the morning I don't care how long you guys stay up at night in your room okay but if I say we need to be up at 7 a.m. you better be up okay ask girls what happened in they were no galus girl when we were in Nashville they decided that they were going to sleep in well mrs. bird came into the room cuz I have keys to all the rooms this is birth came in there and got them and then another time these same girls we said okay we're going to meet at 5 so 505-510-5200 by sure they come you're not going to do that okay you're going to be there if we say five you will be there they didn't like what happened when they were late because everybody was waiting for them everybody was hot and everybody would they get hungry they get mad so don't do that okay be respectful of your other peers here's what happens if there's any create Behavior okay we're going to contact your parents okay one of these stains or something else may happen but you will you'll still with the consequences you'll get the by the school you'll be expelled from the conference which means I will not let you go down to the conference if you do something if I decide you're going to be home I'm going to be talking with your principal counselor and your parents if you have done something so bad that you need to come home here's the deal your parents need to fly to Atlanta come pick you up and take you home at your parents expense okay it almost happened one time but you know we decided not to do we don't want you there if you're going to totally misbehave okay cuz you'd like he said you're going to be representing us we cannot let you fly home yourself and since there's only me your parents would have to come get you and fly you back home if that happens you're going to never be able to participate in a student organization Lenny Kravitz again everybody got that okay we're going to be open you know a long long ways I'm home and it's going to be me and you so I just want to hear mrs. bird so it seems like we're reading the riot act we're just trying to impress upon the students and the parents of the grab it's supposed to be a bunch of noise thing but actions have consequences and we don't want to dwell on those but we do have to explain the severity of things end our campus has been wonderful our district has been wonderful we've haven't had any major issues but you know you could turn on the news and you can hear about these situations where we don't have to go that far you know Johnny Downey Unified they wanted a hiking trip in students relaxed and they had to get the for service if it became a huge thing so the reason were repressing found is just just cuz you want to keep you safe and want to make sure it's a joyful experience so if I could just kind of end with a couple things to avoid these things always say contact always keep your safety in mind buddy system and be aware of your time that beautiful picture has been shut out of the hotel room you might be on on the top floor it takes time to go from the top to the bottom and you have to keep mind of logistics of moving in and out of the hotel so always plan to be ahead is it shouldn't be that difficult we're still in school mode so we're used to getting up eight 7 in the morning and just you know make sure your fuel for the day enjoy the day and as a mentor just make sure your jeep to the to meet lines of communication open and keep your safety and water it should be a fun experience I just wanted to end it with that note so okay we picked you because we think you're the best of the best irresponsible young wonderful students so we think very highly of you but why can't we have to explain this how do you fix mr. Davis is there anything you want to add to that no I think that's well said it's so it's just the fact that it's a new environment and it needs to be treated that way you know so just respect the people around you respect yourself and you don't have to leave your you'll be fine and again this is who you okay so you got to remember that and you're going to see some things that are really good and going to see some things that are not good and that's what helps you grow up can see what things are okay so everybody write down my cell phone number okay it's 951 334 65 43 and put that into your cell phone
